CITY OF FORT LAUDERDALE: New Sewer Main Being Pulled Under Broward Boulevard

Pipe

City of Fort Lauderdale issued the following announcement on Aug. 25

The City of Fort Lauderdale is working with David Mancini & Sons, Inc. to install a portion of the new 7.5 mile sewer main to upgrade infrastructure, create redundancy, enhance reliability, and improve services for our neighbors.

Crews are currently staged on SE 11 Avenue, just south of Broward Boulevard, overseeing the installation of approximately 3,100 feet of new 54-inch High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) pipe.

The pipe is being installed using a technique called underground directional boring, which eliminates the need to dig up the entire street, makes for a quicker more efficient installation, and requires much less time for restoration work.

The pipe is being pulled through a 72-inch underground pathway by a drill rig that is stationed on NE 11th Avenue just south of NE 6 Street. It is estimated that the full length of pipe will be installed over the next 4 to 5 days.

While the work is taking place, there will be intermittent closures on Broward Boulevard at NE 11 Avenue; traffic on Broward Boulevard is also reduced to one eastbound and one westbound lane.

The pipe pull along 11 Avenue is part of the City’s larger Redundant Sewer Force Main Project. The $65 million initiative includes the installation of a new 7.5 mile wastewater transmission line from the lift station near Bayview Drive and NE 37 Street to the G.T. Lohmeyer Wastewater Treatment Plant on SE 18 Street. The project is currently 34% complete with 12,700 linear feet of pipe installed and 6,600 linear feet of pipe currently under construction.

Two contractors are working on the project simultaneously to expedite construction. Murphy Pipeline is installing the northern portion of the pipe, from NE 37 Court south to NE 8 Street. David Mancini & Sons, Inc. is installing the southern portion of the redundant line, from NE 8 Street south to the wastewater treatment plant. The estimated completion date for the project is June 2021.
