Moskowitz, the only former emergency management director in Congress, asks Congress to act after a Category 3 hurricane hits Florida and returns from touring the devastation caused by fires in Lāhainā.

PARKLAND, FLORIDA – Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida) issued the following statement calling on Congress to pass his bipartisan, bicameral legislation that would replenish the Disaster Relief Fund, the main fund FEMA uses to respond and recover from disasters. Moskowitz has been urging the House and the Senate to vote on this legislation for months. After devastating fires that have destroyed parts of Maui, a category 3 hurricane that just hit Florida’s big bend, and countless other natural disasters happening all over the country, the fund is running dry.

“As the former director of emergency management for Florida, I’ve seen a lot of devastation. But I’ve got to be honest: the damage from the Lāhainā fires was overwhelming. With the ongoing on disasters happening more and more frequently the DRF is now almost completely diminished. Disaster response has been and should always be bipartisan. When we return in September, we need immediate action from the House and the Senate to address this crisis. Failure to act will leave FEMA crippled during the height of Hurricane Season.”
