Emerald Nursing and Rehabilitation Center led the county with 240 available beds, making it the largest in Broward County for the quarter. Pearl at Fort Lauderdale Rehabilitation and Nursin had the third highest bed count at 206.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older adult population in the United States continues to grow while the population under 18 shrinks. The number of Americans age 65 and older increased by 13% between 2020 and 2024, as those younger than 18 declined by 1.7%. Older adults have seen significant population growth over the past hundred years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A study from 2021 indicates that nearly half of Americans in this age group—around 28 million—may use long-term care services and support, and over one-third may require nursing home care at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
