Described as “classically trained ballet dancers inspired by the emotional and acrobatic force of the Bolshoi Ballet and world class aerialists from Cirque du Soleil,” the 15 members of Luminario Ballet will spend their Master Artist residency week at SF teaching and mentoring students in the Dance, Technical Theatre and Digital Media Technology programs.

Founded in 2008, Luminario Ballet represents the diversity, artistic creativity and technical excellence for which Los Angeles in internationally known. One of Luminario’s dancers, Jamal Story, is returning to SF after previously visiting with Earl Mosley’s Diversity of Dance troupe.

The company’s performance will include seven pieces from their repertoire, including the dance film “L’Invalide,” directed by Judith FLEX Helle, managing and artistic director of Luminario Ballet. The film is described as “a fevered covid dream story…Alice in Wonderland meets Dracula meets the Wilis from Giselle.”

“We’re thrilled that Luminario Ballet agreed to travel across the country to offer Master Artist teaching and mentoring to students in three different SF programs,” said Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology Chairperson Alora Haynes. “The students in our new Associate of Science degree program in Theatre and Entertainment Technology will have a great opportunity to learn how to create the specialized rigging that’s required for aerial dance; that’s a high-level skill that pays very well. Our Digital Media instructors and students will be inspired by Luminario’s use of three-dimensional lighting projections to create visual landscapes. Students in the Dance program will benefit from a contemporary dance class, an aerial class and a discussion with Luminario’s professionals about their career journeys as dancers and gymnasts.”

Luminario Ballet’s Master Artist residency and performance are organized and sponsored by the Santa Fe College Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology Department.
