City of Mount Dora issued the following announcement on Dec. 17
The Mount Dora Police Department along with Waste Management, have teamed up to place "burglar boxes" out to help keep the first garbage collection after Christmas from turning into a window-shopping spree for criminals.
After you open all your gifts, you should put your cardboard boxes in your regular waste container or beside your container. Please crush them to maximize container space. If you have to put cardboard outside the container, you should cut it up and turn it inside out to conceal what the box content was. If not, whole boxes with labels can tip off thieves on what hot new toy Santa brought.
As a safe alternative, folks in Mount Dora may also use the public cardboard box recycling dumpsters or “burglar boxes” conveniently set up in downtown to dispose of those big-ticket item boxes like TVs and computers.
"After you go shopping, unfortunately, some bad apples are doing their own shopping at our resident’s expense," said Police Chief Brett Meade. "When they drive through a neighborhood on garbage day, all they need to do is look for the expensive electronic boxes put out to find a tempting opportunity to do bad." It is just good common sense to recycle your cardboard boxes in a manner to help prevent crime.
The "burglar box" is located 7th Ave and Donnelly Street next to the old post office in downtown Mount Dora. The “burglar box” program will be available from (Thursday) December 23 to (Thursday) December 30, 2021.
