Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1979, she is a graduate of Howard University and St. Thomas University. Cherfilus-McCormick replaced Alcee Hastings in Congress and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives.
On March 24, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick expressed her sorrow over the passing of Mia Love. She described Love as “a trailblazer in every sense of the word” and offered condolences to Love’s family: “I am saddened to hear of Mia Love’s passing. She was a trailblazer in every sense of the word — a barrier-breaker and visionary who pushed forward so that more Black women could pursue elected office.”
Later that day, Cherfilus-McCormick addressed concerns from her constituents about ongoing issues in Washington D.C., stating: “These last few weeks, I’ve heard directly from so many of my constituents across FL-20. They’re angry and frustrated about what’s happening in DC — rightfully so.” She emphasized her commitment to continue fighting through litigation, legislation, and local efforts.
On March 25, 2025, she highlighted her engagement with constituents by hosting town halls to listen to their concerns firsthand: “In just under a week, I hosted four town halls so that I could listen to #FL20 families firsthand and hear their concerns.” The congresswoman noted that these interactions are motivating her efforts as she returns to Washington.
