Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a representative of Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, recently shared updates on her ongoing community engagement and policy concerns via Twitter. Serving in Congress since 2022, Cherfilus-McCormick conveyed her reflections and upcoming plans through several tweets that addressed local issues and national policy challenges.

On April 16, Cherfilus-McCormick highlighted sentiments experienced during her town hall meetings across her district. She reported “I’ve heard this anxiety and frustration firsthand at my town halls across FL-20.” The congresswoman noted seniors’ worries about social security benefits and the impact of tariffs on prices, emphasizing the financial pressure on those living on fixed incomes.

Later the same day, she announced her participation in a community town hall in Sunrise, Florida. She tweeted “I’m excited to be joining @cityofsunrise tonight at 6pm for a community town hall on housing resources.” expressing her anticipation to discuss housing issues with local residents.

On April 17, Cherfilus-McCormick mentioned her meeting with Dr. Nikia Phillips, the first African American midwife at Palms West. She shared an opportunity to discuss the Black maternal health crisis, stating “This District Work Week, I had an opportunity to sit down with Dr. Nikia Phillips — the first African American midwife to deliver at Palms West — and have a conversation about what contributes to the Black maternal health crisis.” She underscored the need for high-quality maternal care for every mother.

Cherfilus-McCormick, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1979, has roots in Florida and currently resides in Miramar. With a background that includes a BA from Howard University and a JD from St. Thomas University, she continues to engage with and address the needs of her constituents in Florida’s 20th congressional district.
