Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on social media highlighting the legacy of Nelson Mandela and responding to recent legal developments regarding Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) deportations.
On July 18, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick commemorated Nelson Mandela’s influence by writing, “Courageous. Selfless. Resilient—these are just a few words that describe Nelson Mandela and the profound impact he had and continues to have on the world. His legacy knows no bounds. May we honor his memory by committing to a future led by kindness, shaped by impact, and forged”.
The following day, she addressed a significant court ruling related to Haitian TPS deportations. On July 19, 2025, she stated, “Following a major court ruling and months of advocacy, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick calls the halt to Haitian TPS deportations a legal victory—and a crucial step toward lasting dignity, protection, and meaningful immigration reform for Haitian families and immigrant communities”. In another post on the same day, she added: “This is not just a policy decision—it is a hard-fought legal victory for the Haitian community and all who have stood in defense of our immigrant families. The court’s ruling makes clear what we have always known: TPS holders deserve stability, protection, and respect, not”.
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has served as U.S. Representative for Florida’s 20th District since 2022 after succeeding Alcee Hastings. She previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives and was born in Brooklyn in 1979 before moving to Miramar.
