Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, shared updates on her recent activities and community advocacy in a series of posts on July 20, 2025.
On July 20, Cherfilus-McCormick attended a diplomatic event marking significant milestones for Caribbean nations. She wrote, “It was an honor to join esteemed leaders at the Diplomatic Dinner in celebration of The Bahamas’ 52nd Independence Anniversary and the commemoration of 52 years of the Caribbean Community’s establishment. I stressed the importance of policies that truly represent all Americans,” (July 20, 2025).
Later that day, she addressed recent legal developments benefiting South Florida’s Haitian community. In a post discussing her appearance on NBC6, Cherfilus-McCormick stated, “I spoke with @nbc6 about the big court win for our Haitian community. We fought for the expansion of TPS, and we won. Our community showed up, stood strong, and made this happen. As the Congresswoman for South Florida, where more TPS holders live than anywhere else in the” (July 20, 2025).
Reflecting on her week in Congress and looking ahead to future challenges, she concluded with another message: “As we wrap up another week in Congress and look ahead, I’m filled with hope and gratitude for the strength of our community. Through every challenge, we’ve proven that when we stand together, united in purpose and guided by compassion, we are unstoppable.” (July 20, 2025).
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has represented Florida’s 20th district since replacing Alcee Hastings in 2022. Prior to her service in Congress, she was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Brooklyn in 1979 and currently residing in Miramar at age 44, Cherfilus-McCormick holds a BA from Howard University and a JD from St. Thomas University.
