Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, has been vocal on social media regarding recent political developments and events. Her comments provide insights into her stance on policies she perceives as discriminatory and her concern over civil rights issues.
On June 8, 2025, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick expressed concerns about former President Trump’s renewed push for a travel ban, stating, “Just spoke with @CNN on Trump’s renewed push for a travel ban. Let’s be clear: this policy was rooted in discrimination, not national security. We won’t let history repeat itself.”
Later that day, Cherfilus-McCormick commented on what she described as an excessive use of force against protesters. She remarked, “At first glance, I thought this was a scene from a third-world country. Who are we becoming? This display of force against peaceful, unarmed protesters is a disturbing attempt to silence people simply for standing up for their rights.”
The following day, June 9, 2025, she reiterated her opposition to the travel ban during an interview with CNN’s Victor Blackwell. In her statement, she said: “I spoke with @CNN’s Victor Blackwell about Trump’s renewed travel ban. We cannot and will not let history repeat itself. We must stand united against policies that undermine our values and the very principles this country was built on. It’s time to put humanity before hate.”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has served in the U.S. Congress since 2022 after replacing Alcee Hastings. Born in Brooklyn in 1979 and currently residing in Miramar, Cherfilus-McCormick graduated from Howard University and earned a JD from St. Thomas University.
