Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, representing Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed several pressing issues through her social media. Known for her advocacy on various concerns, Cherfilus-McCormick utilized the platform to voice her opinions and highlight her ongoing efforts in addressing key matters.
On April 22, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick criticized what she perceives as selective condemnation by Republicans in the case of Secretary Austin, contrasting it with their silence on Pete Hegseth’s handling of classified information. She expressed her views in a social media post, stating “As I told @theGrio, Republicans were so eager to come for Secretary Austin, but are now completely silent when Pete Hegseth irresponsibly handles classified information and puts our brave service members in harm’s way.” She urged her colleagues across the aisle to address the issue.
In another message the same day, Cherfilus-McCormick voiced concerns about America’s diplomatic relations, emphasizing the need for consistency and reliability. She articulated in her tweet, “At this moment, when so many fear that they cannot count on America, the last thing we should be doing is upending our diplomatic footprint. We should be living up to our commitments, not continually reneging on them.”
Further, Cherfilus-McCormick addressed veterans’ affairs, acknowledging their sacrifices and the importance of supporting them post-service. On April 22, 2025, she expressed gratitude to participants of a listening session focused on protecting the PACT Act and veterans’ benefits, stating “Our veterans made countless sacrifices. They should not have to fight harder for care at home than they did protecting our country on the battlefield. A special thank you to all those in #FL20 who joined my listening session on protecting the PACT Act and veterans’ benefits.”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been serving in the U.S. Congress, representing Florida’s 20th District, since replacing Alcee Hastings in 2022. Her prior experience includes a tenure in the Florida House of Representatives. A native of Brooklyn, New York, she graduated from Howard University in 2001 and earned her JD from St. Thomas University in 2010.
