Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who has represented Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress since 2022, marked the anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid and raised concerns about immigration enforcement in a series of posts on social media this week.

On July 30, Cherfilus-McCormick posted: “Today marks 60 years of Medicare and Medicaid—programs that are not a handout, but a lifeline for millions. These vital services protect our health, our dignity, and our future.

We must stand firm in defending them and ensure they continue to serve those who need them most, now https://t.co/wAJQZW4hvz“.

A day later, she shared her experiences visiting local healthcare providers: “This week, I visited Holy Cross New Family Health Center and spoke with frontline healthcare workers about the challenges and opportunities in Medicare and Medicaid.

These programs are vital to millions, and strengthening them means ensuring everyone has access to quality, https://t.co/r7LnEyYC8C” (July 31).

Later that same day, Cherfilus-McCormick addressed issues related to immigration enforcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), writing: “A U.S. citizen disappeared by ICE.

This is exactly why I continue to sound the alarm.

When even American citizens are being targeted, we must ask: who’s really safe?

This isn’t just about immigration. It’s about justice, due process, and protecting our rights here at home.”

Cherfilus-McCormick was born in Brooklyn in 1979 and currently resides in Miramar. She holds degrees from Howard University (BA) and St. Thomas University (JD). Before her election to Congress following the passing of Alcee Hastings in 2022, she served in the Florida House of Representatives.

Her recent comments come amid ongoing national debates over healthcare policy for older adults and low-income Americans as well as concerns regarding due process for citizens involved with federal immigration authorities.
