Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, representing Florida’s 20th district, recently addressed several pressing issues through her social media posts. Serving in Congress since 2022 after replacing Alcee Hastings, she has continued to focus on healthcare access, small business support, and accountability in detention facilities.
On May 5, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick emphasized the impact of potential cuts to Medicaid by stating that “Medicaid covers health care for 1 in 3 Americans.” She warned that regardless of the nature of the cuts, they would result in families losing essential healthcare access.
The following day, on May 6, she celebrated National Small Business Week with a post highlighting the importance of small businesses to her district’s economy. She expressed her commitment to supporting these enterprises by ensuring they have necessary resources and backing from Washington: “Small businesses are the heart of #FL20’s economy.”
Later that same day, Cherfilus-McCormick reported on a visit to the Broward Transitional Center. She aimed to seek accountability following Marie Blaise’s death at the facility. Her experience was notably different from a previous visit in March; she noted encountering “open hostility and evasiveness by staff.”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was born in Brooklyn in 1979 and resides in Miramar. A graduate of Howard University with a BA and St. Thomas University with a JD, she previously served in the Florida House of Representatives before joining Congress.
