Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on November 3, 2025, addressing the impact of the ongoing government shutdown and advocating for continued support for social safety net programs.
In her first post on November 3, Cherfilus-McCormick highlighted the immediate effects of the shutdown: “This government shutdown has real consequences: empty grocery carts, unpaid workers, and children going to bed hungry.”
She continued by emphasizing the importance of federal nutrition assistance programs. On the same day, she wrote: “Millions of Americans depend on SNAP to put food on the table: parents, veterans, and seniors. It’s not a luxury. It’s a lifeline.”
Cherfilus-McCormick also reiterated her commitment to resolving the shutdown and supporting families in her district: “I’m fighting every day to reopen the government and get relief to South Florida families. No one should have to beg for dinner in the richest country in the world.”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has served as U.S. Representative for Florida’s 20th District since 2022 after succeeding Alcee Hastings. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Brooklyn in 1979, Cherfilus-McCormick currently resides in Miramar. She is an alumna of Howard University and holds a law degree from St. Thomas University.
