Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, representing Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress since 2022, shared several updates via her social media platform recently. Her posts addressed various issues ranging from social justice recognition to concerns over potential reductions in critical social programs and a festive greeting.
On May 3, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick expressed gratitude for receiving the Dorothy Height Social Justice Award from the YWCA Palm Beach County. She stated: “It was an honor to receive the Dorothy Height Social Justice Award from the @ywca_pbc and speak to a group of trailblazing women who are being called on to lead in this very moment — women who are changing their #FL20 communities for the better every single day.”
In another update dated May 5, 2025, she highlighted her opposition to proposed cuts in essential public assistance programs. She noted: “There’s no denying it — sweeping reductions to food assistance, Social Security, and Medicaid would hurt #FL20 families. I’m fighting back every day in Washington so that these lifeline programs are left untouched.” The congresswoman also expressed appreciation for Lauderhill residents attending her recent town hall meeting.
Also on May 5, Cherfilus-McCormick extended greetings for Cinco de Mayo with a brief message: “Happy Cinco de Mayo, Florida!”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been actively involved in legislative duties since succeeding Alcee Hastings. Born in Brooklyn and now residing in Miramar at age 44, she holds degrees from Howard University and St. Thomas University.
