Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 20th district, shared her reflections on various events and issues in a series of recent social media posts. Since succeeding Alcee Hastings in 2022, Cherfilus-McCormick, born in Brooklyn and now residing in Miramar, has been actively engaging with national and local matters.
On May 2, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick attended the launch of the Next Narrative Africa Forum in Washington, D.C. She emphasized the continent’s significant potential, expressing her excitement for those investing their efforts there. “It was an honor to witness the launch of the @nextnarrativeAF here in D.C. Africa is a continent brimming with boundless potential, and I am thrilled to see so many people invest their time and energy to tap into all Africa has to offer. Investing in Africa is a true investment”, she stated.
Later, on the same day, she expressed her concerns following a visit to the Broward Transitional Center, prompted by the death of Marie Blaise. Cherfilus-McCormick highlighted her dissatisfaction with the facility’s procedures and healthcare provisions, stating, “Today, I visited the Broward Transitional Center seeking answers in the wake of Marie Blaise’s tragic death. Instead, I left with more questions and serious concerns. I failed to see any evidence that there are proper procedures in place and that adequate health care was”.
On May 3, 2025, she acknowledged the beginning of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Cherfilus-McCormick encouraged collective recognition and celebration of the contributions from the AANHPI communities, stating, “May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Together, let’s use this month to celebrate #AANHPI trailblazers and their countless contributions to our country.”
