City of Coral Springs recently issued the following announcement.

The Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Committee voted to award the 2022 MLK Monument Award to Bishop Rick Thomas for his valuable service and contributions to the 

Coral Springs community.

The MLK Monument Award honors local individuals or organizations who embody the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bishop Thomas has been actively involved with 

supporting the Coral Springs MLK Committee’s programs since its inception.  

“The core values of Bishop Rick Thomas are Love, Honor, Serve, & Giving.” Coral Springs Vice Mayor Josh Simmons said. “He believes and embodies these core values and 

practices them continuously; to honor him with the MLK Monument Award demonstrates how much we appreciate his service to our community.”

Bishop Rick Thomas is the head pastor of Abundant Life Church and headmaster of Abundant Life Academy and lived in Coral Springs for more than 40 years. He has been 

actively involved in the MLK Committee’s programs such as MLK Luncheons, Golfing with the King, the National Day of Prayer, the International Day of Peace, One Planet United, 

the Literary and Art Student Awards, and the MLK Scholarship program.

In addition, Bishop Thomas has hosted middle and high school student at Abundant Life Church for “It’s a Day On, Not A Day Off!” Leadership and Diversity Day on Martin Luther 

King Jr. Day annually. His parishioners have also participated in Coral Spring’s Unitown where students share their cultural experiences and learn more about community 

leadership.
