During the first quarter of 2026, Emerald Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was recognized as Broward County’s largest nursing home, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports.

The facility operated 240 available beds—109 above the county average for the same period—and assisted an average of 200.5 residents daily.

Emerald Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received a CMS overall rating of 2 out of 5, falling short of Florida’s nursing home average rating of 3.3.

Sunrise Health & Rehabilitation Center ranked second in size with 237 available beds, while Pearl at Fort Lauderdale Rehabilitation and Nursin placed third with 206 beds for the quarter.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Emerald Nursing and Rehabilitation Center had accumulated $75,117 in fines across 11 violations and received 11 total penalties.

Broward County hosted 24 for-profit nursing homes during this period.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the nation’s population of older adults continues to rise as numbers in younger demographics decrease. Between 2020 and 2024, the U.S. saw a 13% growth in residents aged 65 and older, while the under-18 population dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the older adult population experienced significant growth, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis indicated that close to half of this age group—about 28 million people—could require long-term services and support, with a projected third expected to eventually need nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
