Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 20th district since 2022, recently addressed several pressing issues through her social media platform. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and currently residing in Miramar, Cherfilus-McCormick is a Howard University alumna with a BA and holds a JD from St. Thomas University.
On June 2, 2025, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick expressed her dismay over an antisemitic attack on activists in Boulder advocating for the release of hostages in Gaza. She stated: “I’m appalled by the antisemitic attack on activists in Boulder advocating for the release of hostages in Gaza. My thoughts are with those harmed and their loved ones.” She emphasized that there is no room for antisemitism or hatred of any kind and urged unity against such acts.
Later that day, she commented on affirmative action policies, asserting that their removal would exacerbate inequality rather than create fairness. In her post she remarked: “Ending affirmative action doesn’t level the playing field—it cements inequality.” The Congresswoman reaffirmed her commitment to fighting for policies that expand access to higher education.
On June 3, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick honored Verdenia Baker as Palm Beach County’s first Black and female administrator after nearly four decades of service. She praised Baker’s leadership qualities stating: “I’m honored to recognize Verdenia Baker… After 38 years of dedicated service rooted in integrity, innovation, and community-first leadership.”
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick succeeded Alcee Hastings in Congress and has previously served in the Florida House of Representatives.
