Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, representing Florida’s 20th district in the U.S. Congress, has been vocal on several key issues in recent social media posts. Her statements highlight concerns regarding international crises, local budget appropriations processes, and the impact of national budget proposals on her constituents.

On April 9, 2025, Cherfilus-McCormick addressed the situation in Haiti, asserting, “Armed criminal gangs, with the promotion of cartels, continue to wreak havoc across Haiti. They’re fanning the flames of a worsening humanitarian crisis that has left children hungry.” She pointed to the Haiti Criminal Collusion Transparency Act as a means to bring attention to Haiti’s economic challenges.

The following day, April 10, she extended an invitation to city leaders and nonprofit organizations in her district, Florida’s 20th, urging them to participate in an educational session about federal budget appropriations. In her post, she stated, “Are you a city leader or a nonprofit organization #FL20? Join me next week to learn more about the federal budget appropriations process.” This was an opportunity for these organizations to learn how to secure federal funding for major projects.

Later that day, Cherfilus-McCormick expressed strong criticism of a federal budget proposal which she believes is detrimental to her constituents. She noted, “This budget proposal is a complete disaster for working families in South Florida. Not only does it make massive cuts to the Medicaid funding and food assistance that Florida families need, but it also slashes Pell Grants for low-income students.” Her concerns focused on the proposed cuts affecting Medicaid, food assistance, and education grants.

Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has served in the U.S. Congress since 2022, succeeding Alcee Hastings. She was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1979 and resides in Miramar. Cherfilus-McCormick is an alumna of Howard University and holds a JD from St. Thomas University.
